Number 1 LZ

The #1 LZ is directly below and visible from the Main Launch (as pictured above). It is used as a primary LZ for paragliders and a bailout LZ for hang gliders. Because of the performance of most modern hang gliders (even beginner/intermediate gliders), the LZ can be a technically demanding to land in. You should visit and carefully inspect ALL LZs before flying Hat Creek Rim. The #1 LZ is not recommended for beginner or novice hang glider pilots. (Show me the #2 or Buttonhook LZ.)

Elevation: 3484' MSL

Size: Approx. 9 acres - LZ runs north to south

Coordinates: N40°50.333' W121°26.283'

Prevailing wind (summer afternoon): South and West. Morning/late evening; light and variable.

Permanent Windsock: Yes. But always check before flying, they have disappeared.

Vertical Obstacles: Tree-lined boundary, windsock.

Surface Irregularities: Minor. Sparse small lava rocks with short vegetation in the center. Sweet spot is on the west side of LZ

Water: No., Shade: Yes., Toilet: No., Trash: No.

Vehicle Access: Excellent

Parking: As you pull into the LZ follow the road around into the parking area (see map).

Cellular Service: No.

Ham repeater: 147.030+

Precautions:

This LZ has the most demanding approach due to its small overall size and the tall trees that line the boundary.

During the winter water accumulates in the center of this LZ - it can be a marsh in early Spring.

Landing before 6pm on a hot, windy summer day can be a real demanding task - are you ready to rumble?!?

Altitude density is the actual density of the air you are launching, flying and landing in. On a hot summer day, the altitude density in the landing areas (ranging in altitude from 3,485' to 3,865') can routinely exceed 6,000 feet and above.

This is a wind gradient and wind shadow area, be prepared - wheels are sometimes useful.

Do not drive in the LZ.

Avoid travel when roads are muddy or soft.

Cattle sometimes graze in the LZ.

Other:

This LZ is sometimes used early in the day for sledders or by those attempting an early thermal flight.

It's a 0.9 mile drive from the main 22 road to this LZ.

Camping and Campfires
Be fire safe and leave no trash

If you plan on camping next to this LZ, please comply with all fire regulations and/or restrictions. Your free REQUIRED campfire permit is available at the following places; The USFS center on Hwy 89 (just south of Fireside), the Old Station Visitor Center and CDF in Johnson Park. NOTE: Campfires in the LZs (and outside all established campgrounds) will most likely be banned by the end of June due to fire danger.
