Hat Creek Rim
Pioneered, Developed and Maintained by the Shasta Sky Sailors since 1975

Sad news; longtime friend and retired hang glider pilot, Dave Baleria, passed away on 2/28/08.  It was a sudden and unexpected death according to his wife, Sandy.  Dave did most of his flying in the southern Oregon area.  Dave was a 'get it done' kind of guy who contributed greatly to the sport of hang gliding while he was flying.  Fly high 'Sky Sheriff', you have your wings again.  In the last 6 years he and his wife Sandy had been full-time RVing.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Hang gliding and paragliding are both popular at the Hat Creek Rim.  The site
has enough room for all who want to fly here and a history of putting smiles on the faces of those who do.
The Shasta Sky Sailors have been instrumental in the development of Hat Creek Rim since pioneering the site back in 1975.  In 1993, we more than doubled the soaring area by constructing a new LZ and launch area two miles south of the Main Launch.
The Shasta Sky Sailors hope you find the information here beneficial and your flying at the Rim rewarding.  Flying at Hat Creek Rim is permitted under a Forest Service Special Use Permit and funded through user donations.  Please support the vital 'Friend of the Rim' fundraising effort
While visiting Hat Creek Rim please fly safely and respect the site and other users.
The Map of the Site shows the general layout of the area and includes interactive links to comprehensive information about the site and local services.  Another Topo view map gives you a view of the entire ridge and includes information about flying the highest section of the ridge.  The Site/Flying Information page contains recommended pilot skills and other important information.  There are two launch areas, Main and South, three permanent landing areas, #1,2& Buttonhook, a store, restaurant & campground, consistent summer glass-offs, 2WD roads, unimproved camping in the LZs, and an abundance of other recreational activities in the area
Enjoy your visit to Hat Creek Rim.
While in the area, check out the 'The Loop', three destination flying areas, all less than four hours apart (Hat Creek Rim, Lakeview, Or., Woodrat, Or.)  For assistance in planning your flying vacation at the Rim, feel free to contact any of these club members. Use these links for weather and winds aloft information.

Important note to those who may have arrived here from 'Google Earth'(GE).  You should be aware that some of the depicted roads and road information on GE are inaccurate (old or no longer existing roads) for Hat Creek Rim.  Use our site map while visiting.
